block

drawn on the table waiting for my dining partner for lunch at the gourmet factory on Western Blvd

I've been in a funk. I think I'm coming out of it. It might be that spring air, which I will soon be missing. But I'll be skipping the splendors of spring for PAX East in Boston for the weekend so that's a fair trade.

With love from the little red sketchbook.

Hey! My goal is to post something on here at least every two weeks!! Let's see if I can do it!

Last Saturday when I went to see Megafaun and Bowerbirds at The ArtsCenter. I keep a small sketchbook in my purse most of the time and at the show I started drawing the bands. It was really fun and I think I'll continue doing it in the future. I'll probably have to stand closer to the stage though. o_o;

This is Megafaun; they were wonderful on stage and I'm listening to their CD right now. They were also a lot of fun to draw I think this batch of sketches came out very nicely. I love to draw like this, but as you can tell they lack clarity.

These sketches are of Bowerbirds. They didn't come out as well as I had hoped. Maybe its because the room became crowded and I had a harder time seeing the stage or I was thinking about it too much.

Here are my favorites from the rest of the sketchbook. The first two are doodles of the main character of a story I'm plotting out in my head. Her name is Anatida or Anadtidae and she is the bodyguard to the Vermilion Princess of Tuonela.

I think I'm going crazy

My oh so serious response to an article in the Wall Street Journal about how nuclear power will generate more jobs and is in America's future. You can read it online here.

I was excited to have finally cooked my eggs the way I liked.

A dark knight.

Meh. I shall grace you with a drawing of my true love whilst I figure out what in the world is going on.

OMG have you seen Star Trek yet? Go, go now!

I went to Dr. Sketchy's last week with the model LiiLii Lipstick! It was very fun. They always have the sessions on Monday night when I've had classes so I've never been able to go, but classes were over so I was able to go. Unfortuantely now I'm leaving town! Bummer.

Here are my favorites from the night.

So Dr. Sketchy's has contests where you get a drawing prompt or challenge and compete for a prize. One of the challenges was for a munny doll and the challenge was to draw Captain Kirk hitting on the model (because the new Star Trek movie is awesome). Not only had a I seen the movie the Friday before (and last night too o_O) and totally loved Captain Kirk, but I really, really wanted a munny. So I said "Hells yes I am winning this." And I did.

I'm thinking of making the munny into Spock because Spock is awesome. Like I never had any idea that Spock was so awesome. Why didn't someone tell me this?

And I colored a sketch because I am cool like that.

The moral of the story is to go to Dr.Sketchy's.

Lists and skeleton dudes.

I've started making to do lists. Many lists. Far too many lists, my desk gets covered in them, but if I don't make them I tend to forget everything.

And some sketches and doodles because I love you. (Look out the first one is largeish.)

I finally got around to creating one of them newfangled blog things...

I illustrated the cover of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I liked the typography on the original cover, but the image on my copy (which I've lost...) was neat, but I had no idea what it had to do with the story.

Thumb nails of space and the Battle Room.

I got it in my head some how that the flash suits had to look a little bit like Robocop... I haven't seen the movie (I'll get around to it), but I think my brother had an action figure. It's a cool visor.

It only really shows through in the lighting and I guess the looming Bugger, but I used this assignment as an excuse to watch Alien and Aliens. I love the sets in those movies. A lot of my reference pictures were movie stills. I wanted it to feel a little bit like an updated 80s science fiction movie. And by updated I mean none of those gigantic low resolution monitors with little space invaders on them, hah hah. Outdated technology amuses me as long as it isn't mine. Like my forty pound TV... That's not funny...

Cool looking kid, bright colors, and a mysterious floating insect. I'd like to think it would encourage young readers to pick up the book and read it.

There will be more stuff soon!!
